Tour summary
Humber College and an industry partner collaborated to establish the Sustainable Microgrid and Renewable Technology Lab, otherwise known at the SMART Lab. This new space marks another milestone in Humber’s commitment to sustainability. Located at North Campus, the SMART Lab will provide an educational and experimental environment to train students and professionals on the use of a microgrid system and to conduct research in collaboration with industry.
Deemed the future of energy management, microgrids are decentralized energy systems that can generate, distribute and control power. They rely primarily on renewable energy sources, like wind and solar photovoltaic (PV), which reduces carbon emissions.
With intelligent control systems, microgrids provide 24/7 uninterrupted power, and allow for much greater control of energy consumption, saving businesses and small communities energy and money.
The SMART Lab’s benefits go beyond the campus. With its training, research and innovation in sustainable technology and microgrids, the SMART Lab will mitigate the current skills gap and provide future professionals with the hands-on technical education required to further expand and adopt microgrid technology into society. The living lab is also a key element for Humber to take advantage of its own energy assets and achieve its sustainability goals.
