Event Summary

In this presentation we will explore the process and workflow for preparing different mechanical design options for a project and selecting the most suitable design. This presentation will walk attendees through the steps of defining the problem that needs to be solved, quantifying unknown variables, compiling possible solutions, and evaluating options. Often design choices are subjective, however this lecture will seek to distil each point to its most basic elements, and provide the attendees with a format they can use to apply their own knowledge and experiences in the pursuit of a design that fits the conditions as best as possible.

Niss Feiner, C.Tech, CHD, RASDT, RVDT

President - Delta-T Design Inc.

Instructor, HRAI (Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada)

Professor - Hydronic System Design, George Brown College

Voting Member - Board of Governors and Society Historical Committee, ASHRAE Toronto Chapter

Niss Feiner has been in the industry since January 2006. With this background on the construction end, Niss has been able to provide practical and effective solutions on the engineering side through his company Delta-T Designs Inc.

A firm believer in ongoing education, and industry participation, Niss is a Certified (Engineering) Technician with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists, and in October of 2019 became the first designer in Canada to hold the Certified HVAC Designer designation as provided by ASHRAE. This certification validates competency to design HVAC systems to meet building/project requirements, including load calculations, equipment selection and sizing, mechanical equipment room design, duct and piping design and layout for the development of HVAC plans for permit and construction.

As of March 2020, Niss was also accepted to the instruction team for the Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) providing instruction on building load calculations and system design, and in September 2020, Niss joined George Brown College as a Professor of Hydronic Systems Design and HVAC Computer Applications, respectively.

In October 2020 Niss joined the HRAI Advisory Council on Indoor Air Quality in Commercial and Institutional Buildings as the Council Secretariat, where his duties include preliminary technical vetting of documents, coordination with committee members, and production and editing of final documentation produced by the committee. This council’s current primary focus is building operation during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic.

Niss is highly involved with ASHRAE at the local, and society level. He serves as a voting member of the Board of Governors for the Toronto Chapter of ASHRAE, as well as serves on the Society Historical Committee as a voting member and is a Member of ASHRAE Technical Committee 2.2 (Plant and Animal Environment) and ASHRAE Technical Committee 5.10 (Kitchen Ventilation). He also contributed to the creation of the Certified HVAC Designer study guide, and to the Commercial Kitchen Ventilation Design Guide (currently under production).
