Jeffrey Siegel

Ph.D.

Professor - University of Toronto

Jeffrey Siegel, Ph.D., is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto and a member of the university’s Building Engineering Research Group. He holds joint appointments at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health and the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences.  He holds an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley as well as a B.Sc. from Swarthmore College.  He is fellow of ASHRAE and a member of the Academy of Fellows of ISIAQ.  His research interests including healthy and sustainable buildings, ventilation and indoor air quality in residential and commercial buildings, control of indoor particulate matter, the indoor microbiome, and moisture interactions with indoor chemistry and biology.  Dr. Siegel is an active member of ISIAQ and ASHRAE and was an associate editor for the journal Building and Environment from 2014-2018.  He teaches courses in indoor air quality, sustainable buildings, and sustainable energy systems. Prior to his position at the University of Toronto, Dr. Siegel was an Associate Professor at the University of Texas.

Alex Crandall

Commissioning Manager, HIDI Group

Alex is a Commissioning Manager with over 10 years of experience dedicated to the quality focused building commissioning process. He has acted as the Commissioning Agent for a diverse range of projects and developed numerous documents for the full commissioning process, including new construction, tenant fit-up, existing building commissioning, energy audits, building analytics, and ongoing commissioning. Alex has had exposure to multiple building sectors, including mission critical, leisure and recreation, emergency services, residential high-rise, public transportation, retail, commercial, and schools. As part of the commissioning process, Alex has taken a hands-on approach to evaluating indoor environmental quality and has worked with building teams to develop corrective action where needed. Alex has also acted as an IAQ reviewer for Energy Star building certifications and as a technical expert for new and existing building IAQ credits for LEED certification.

Amy Li

Ph.D. Candidate

University of Toronto 

Amy received her BASc from the University of Toronto. She is currently a PhD candidate under the supervision of Dr. Jeffery Siegel. She recently completed an ASHRAE research project that examined the IAQ and energy impacts of high-efficiency filters in residential buildings. Her current research focuses on the evaluation of air cleaning system operating strategies and exposure reduction.
